The Importance of Good Underwear

Why do we need good underwear?

Many people out there dread shopping for underwear. Imagining walking through store after store, only to find things that are too big, too small or simply not for you. What. A. Drag. And admittedly it can be. But that goes for shopping in general. Just as well as you have off days in your everyday life, you will have off days when you go shopping. There will be times where you find everything you need and it all fits perfectly and there will be off days when you stand in the changing room, looking in the mirror, able to think nothing but “ugh”.

However, regardless of how unexcited we may be about putting down time and money to find good underwear, it is crucial as well as an investment. Some men, women too I might add, like to wear their underwear till the threads basically turn to dust. “A few holes here and there, who cares.” Y’know? Others take their underwear as seriously as their regular clothes. They believe that they should look and fit great, as well as match each other and the outfit on top. Whichever one of those you are, it is important still that you make sure you have decent underwear in your wardrobe. When the underwear, whether it is panties, bras or shorts, start to lose their shape and start almost yellowing in colour, they should have been thrown out yesterday. Ill fitting underwear does nothing for your body and can even make your outfit look bad on you, even though it is your size and everything.

What do we need and how much?

Thus, let’s look into this further. There are many different types of underwear and what kind suits you you’ll have to figure out on your own. Go look in your wardrobe right now. Do you need new underwear? Then you are lucky because right now it is nearby impossible not to find a sale. What you need differs a bit from whether you have a female or male body, how active you are and well, what you are like as a person. Men do not need support as much as women. For women, apart from panties they need a certain amount of bras. More often than not, these are said to be minimum:

  • 1-2 sport bras
  • 3 basic bras (1 black, 1 beige and 1 white)
  • 1-2 fancier bras that make you feel like a knockout
  • 1-2 matching sets
  • 1-2 colourful bras to brighten your mood

Among the bras’ it is important to have at least one push-up bra, one strapless and one balconette because different styles are needed for different outfits and moods. For example, during your feminine time of the month, you will most likely not be too keen to wear a push-up bra because it’ll make you feel like you have your chest right under your chin. When you are wearing a strapless dress or top and don’t feel like going without a bra, a strapless bra is quite necessary. Unless you have a whole lot of chest-tape that is, or a wing bra. Thirdly, a balconette is a guarantee that your chest will look amazing. It lifts and separates, it is damn comfortable and it looks cute regardless of chest size. Other bras and styles you may need differs depending on your chest size. For a very small chest, an underwired bra is not always needed. Wireless triangle bras can look very flattering and sexy and padded/gel bras can be a godsend. For a larger chest, the full bra, the t-shirt bra and the balconette are the most comfortable and supportive choices.

How do you know your size?

Well when it comes to your bum size, it is whatever your pant size is. When it comes to your chest, it is another story. You have to measure yourself and do so with precision.

First you measure below the bust and then you measure where the bust is the fullest (never wear a padded bra when you do this). Take the measurement under your chest and match it to a bra width. If it is an odd number, for example 73, round it up to 75. Then you take your bust measurement minus your under bust measurement and you will have a number which is the cm difference between the two.

  • A 13 cm difference is an A-cup
  • A 15 cm difference is a B-cup
  • A 17 cm difference is a C-cup
  • A 19 cm difference is a D-cup
  • A 21 cm difference is an E-cup
  • A 24 cm difference is an F-cup
  • A 26 cm difference is a G-cup
  • A 30 cm difference is a H-cup
  • A 32 cm difference is an I-cup

If you still can’t get in the “mood” or get enough inspiration to go shopping, think of it this way. Do you wish to look like a knockout with the body of the early 20-something version of you regardless of how old you really are? Or do you want to look like the 60 year old you, when you are in your early 20s?

That’s what I thought.

Now then, get movin’ and hit the sales!
